Our founder, David England, is passionate about rum to say the least. He also has strong family links with the Caribbean – his grandparents lived at Discovery Bay in Jamaica for 15 years and his family makes an annual pilgrimage to Antigua.
The inspiration for Papa Bois came from a chance meeting with one of Scotland’s leading Master Blenders, during which David confessed that he didn't drink whisky, always preferring cask-aged rum instead. The Master Blender therefore presented David with a specially selected dram to illustrate that a neat rum drinker will also like certain Scotch malt whiskies. This encounter opened David’s eyes to the possibilities of creating unique and fascinating rum flavours through the skilful use of Scotch whisky casks.
David’s vision for a new rum brand was born!
"Ever since I can remember, rum shelves have been dominated by large impersonal brands. There is a gap in the market for a Scottish premium rum brand. A superior cask-aged liquid – distilled in the Caribbean, the home of rum, and extra matured in Scotland – which can sit alongside the finest Single Malt Scotch Whiskies, surprising and rewarding those in search of something more."
DAVID ENGLAND — FOUNDER
We are one of the first Scottish companies to combine world-renowned Caribbean rum with expert cask finishing in Scotland, utilising different cask types, maturation periods and partners to create the most incredible results.
We’re on a journey of discovery and won’t rest until we know that what’s inside the bottle is truly world class. We’re not afraid to challenge conventional wisdom and will keep on pushing ourselves until we reach our goal, which is unrivalled quality.
OUR VALUES
Don’t be afraid to break the curve and question the way it has always been. There is no limit to flavour, and we are in the flavour business.
Disrupting the status quo is never easy. A fearless spirit is key to helping us realise we can compete with anyone, no matter how daunting that may seem.
The more we sell, the more we can give back to the world around us through charitable partnerships. Always strive to do the ‘right’ thing and continually question how we create products, procure materials and manage operations.
Fun is – and always has been – a crucial component of rum’s DNA, so let’s not take ourselves too seriously!
