TALES FROM THE FOREST

A legendary figure, Papa Bois (literally ‘Father Wood’) protects the forests, along with their flora and fauna.

OUR PROTECTOR

Half-man, half-deer, Papa Bois is the Protector of the Forest in Caribbean folklore. He’s also the adopted protector of our cask-aged rum.

THE LEGEND

Papa Bois has a man’s head, chest and arms, and the lower body of a deer. Horns sprout from his forehead and he has cloven hooves for feet.

Able to transform himself into a deer, Papa Bois lures hunters deep into the forest where they lose their way.

Papa Bois carries a hollowed-out horn, which he blows to warn animals when hunters are close.

Should you ever meet Papa Bois in the forest, be sure to greet him politely with ‘Bon jour, vieux Papa’ and avoid looking down at his hooves.
